Although based on liturgical forms of the Christian church, each of these works brings us a new approach to the established format.
When Ramirez recorded his Creole Mass in 1964 in Buenos Aires no one could have foreseen its enormous success-selling more than three million copies. It is a striking combination of traditional Argentinian and Hispano-American rhythms.
Requiem, by Karl Jenkins, received its world premiere at Southwark Cathedral in London on 2 June, 2005 following on from the success of The Armed Man.
In Requiem Jenkins interpolates the usual movements of the Requiem Mass with a series of haiku settings in Japanese, moving between the liturgical view of death and that observed in the natural world.
